Interhouse Non-Stop Cricket

Our next interhouse event has begun - interhouse cricket!  All teams have now played their first game, and there has been loads of awesome bowling, batting and fielding.  Some not so good too!  Here are some action shots from the game today:

People Savers First Aid Course

Today our class completed a People Savers First Aid Course.  This was linked to our inquiry learning - 'HOW CAN I BE THE BEST ME?'  Our presenter was Kate from the Red Cross.  She taught us a lot about first aid, and what to do in lots of different situations.  It was really interesting, and we are now far better prepared to deal with a first aid situation.  Thanks Kate!

The Great Jar Competition

We're hoping that all students at our school will be able to bring along a jar filled with 'something interesting' over the next couple of weeks.  We're going to sell these jars at our upcoming school gala. Some people were really onto it, and have brought in a jar already!

Everything Is Awesome!

Miss Simpson is hoping that this could become our new class theme song.  Time to replace the "What's gonna work? Teamwork!" chant.

Student Leaders 2015

Today our student leaders for 2015 were announced.  We're doing things a little differently this year!

House Leaders
Our house leaders will work together to lead our four houses. They will be responsible for the following events:
  • house chants
  • sports events (fun swimming sports and athletics sports)
  • interhouse events

Congratulations to our house leaders:

Student Council
Six students have been chosen to form our student council (though other students may be co opted onto the council later in the year).  Congratulations to Jorja, Danielle, Sophie, Madison, Ffion and Jade.  When this group meets for the first time next week, they will allocate the key positions of president, secretary, treasurer, and advertising managers. These students will be responsible for:
  • organising school events
  • deciding how the money the council raises should be spent

Sixtus Lodge

We've returned from an epic three days at Sixtus Lodge!  The weather was magnificent, and we had an awesome time participating in loads of challenges and activities including, a tech challenge, R6 survivor, boat races, swimming, dam building, cricket, longball, exploring Cone Creek, leap frog, human towers, hut building, spotlight and class speeches.

This has helped us to learn more about each other, develop new skills and try new things.  We did a lot of talking about role models and leaders, and started to think about our goals for 2015.

Thank you to all the parents who did baking, made shepherds pie, provided transport and stayed with us at the lodge.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

Wheelchair Rugby

Today we had a visit from members of the Manawatu Wheelchair Rugby Team.  This was part of our inquiry into how we can be the best we can be.  Selwyn and Brendon talked to us about how they came to be in wheelchairs, and about what their lives are like now.  Making sure you wear a seatbelt was a key message!

Next they talked to us about the wonderful sport of wheelchair rugby.... then we got to play!  We had loads of fun bashing and crashing our way to the try line.  A massive thank you to our visitors, you're welcome back anytime!

Flippaball Finals

Over the past week, our four houses have been competing in the Interhouse Flippaball Competition.  Today Matai faced Totara in the playoff for 3rd and 4th.  It was a great battle, but Totara came out on top.  The final followed - Kauri against Rimu.  Kauri took an early lead, but Rimu came back and by half time, the scores were even.  It was goal for goal in the second half, and Rimu just sneaked in with a final goal before the whistle blew.  Well done Rimu!

Congratulations to all teams for the wonderful sportsmanship and competitiveness you've shown.  Bring on Interhouse Cricket in a couple of weeks!

Swimming Pool Awesomeness

We had massive fun swimming with the Room 7 and 1 students this afternoon.  We were all very impressed with their water confidence and it was good fun towing them around the pool.

We had the pool to ourselves for a few minutes after that, so it was time for human towers and human throws!

Special Visitor

Today we had a visit from Sergeant Smith - Bethany's dad.  He is a mechanic in the airforce, working with the Seasprite helicoptor, which is aboard one of New Zealand's warships, Te Kaha.  Here is a picture of the Te Kaha, and the helicoptor:

Sergeant Smith is about to set off on a six month mission around the world.  A big part of this will involve a trip to ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli for the 100th anniversary of the famous battle.  We learnt a little bit about what life is like aboard Te Kaha and we had the opportunity to ask lots of questions. Thanks Sergeant Smith, all the best for your travels!

Cybersafety

Yesterday we had a visit from Constable Cree.  She came along to talk to us about cybersafety and gave us loads of great tips for how to keep safe online.  Today we put all the information together using Popplet - it's an awesome list!

Celebrating Individuality!

We are all totally 100% unique - and just as well!  It would be pretty boring if we were all the same!  We've had some fun looking at our old baby photos and trying to match the photos to the person.

Dealing With Challenging Situations

As part of our inquiry work, we've been learning about strategies we can use when we face tough times.  Unfortunately life isn't always easy, and we have to be able to deal with lots of challenging things.

Firstly, we made a list of all the challenges we might face during the next few years of our lives:

Next we came up with a massive list of things we could do to help us 'survive' the challenging situations.  We had fun playing around with the fonts and colours too!
