AWESOME NEWS! At the end of last term, some students entered the annual Doodle For Google competition. The challenge was to redesign the Google logo under the criteria, 'If I could travel back in time...' Google received more than 4500 entries, and we're thrilled that Jade has made it through to the final round - the Top 5 for Year 7 & 8 students. Congratulations Jade! There are some incredible prizes up for grabs, so now our job is to spread the word and get people voting for Jade (you can only vote once on each device).
If I could travel back in time, I would go to the 70's and see what life was like in the days of the flower power. I would like to wear bright clothing and have a fun time!
The murals are done! This has been a 14-month project that lots of students from Room 6 and Miss Simpson have been working on. Mr Tunnicliffe put them up in the hall yesterday and they look awesome!
Earlier in the week, Hamish from the 'Kiwi Living' show contacted Miss Simpson to say that they thought our All Blacks video was pretty cool and asked if it would be okay if they showed parts of it on TV. Of course Miss Simpson said YES! So, on Friday night, some Halcombe School students were on TV!
Our Tech programme has now finished - what an amazing 20 weeks it has been! We've learnt lots of new skills and made some really cool things. Thank you to our awesome Tech teachers; Mr Stoneley, Mrs Nevile and Mrs Alcock. Here are some photos from our last session today:
We also had our RACE DAY today - this was a chance to test out the CO2 cars we've been making with Mrs Alcock. There was a massive variety of designs, colours and styles and we were very excited to see which cars would be the fastest!
The ICT Group made vines too:
To cap it all off, the Food Tech group made lunch for everyone! Yum!
Today the Student Council cooked sausages for lunch - 200 of them! Ffion, Sophie, Danielle, Jed and Daniel did a superb job of cooking the sausages and onions and everyone thought they tasted delicious! Thanks team!
Some students have been working on giving a response to some famous paintings, some of which have been painted by New Zealand artists. Jack, Lydia and Grace used a presentation site called Bunk Rapp to produce the following:
We're learning all about shapes in maths at the moment. One of our challenges was to build a 'shape' using mulitlink cubes. Then our partners had to use a computer programme to reconstruct the shape. It was a bit tricky, so we had to use our problem solving skills and persevere.
Last night we had our Social to celebrate the end of our dance unit. Everyone looked fabulous and had heaps of fun dancing to lots of different songs. #funtimesathalcombeschool
Aaron Smith (yes, we're talking about the All Black and best half back in the world), retweeted the message that we sent him. This had the link to the video that Jensen and Jack made. Aaron has 60,000 followers on Twitter, so they will all see the video too!
There has been some intense debate in Room 6 this week... is superman real? And then Jack caused a massive stir when he said what he said in the video below. What are your thoughts?
We're putting on a big show for our school community in a couple of weeks, and we've been practicing hard. Here is a sneak peak at the three items our class is doing:
The first coat on the fourth and final mural is nearly done. Another couple of weeks and this year-long project will be completed! Thanks to Ffion and Sophie who have been giving Miss Simpson a hand to paint this mural.
This week, we've had the Interhouse Nukumball Challenge, and the competition between the houses has been intense! First we had a round robin competition where everyone played everyone, winning points along the way. The second day of competition was interesting, as the yucky weather forced us to play in the hall. The court was a bit smaller than we are used to, which caused some problems for some teams! On the final day of competition, Matai faced Totara in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. Some smart play by Matai meant they won the match. The final between Kauri and Rimu followed and there were some great tactics and skills shown by both teams. Congratulations to Kauri, who were the eventual winners!
