Term 1 - DONE!

What a massively busy term we've had!  We have worked hard all term, and had lots of fun along the way.  Check out our thoughts about the highlights from this term:

Colour Day AND Spider Day

Colour Day was awesome!  Everyone in our class dressed up and really got into the spirit of the event - there sure were some pretty cool outfits!  We had a parade to show off our gears (and our dance moves), which was heaps of fun.  Later on in the day, we had spiders for lunch!  Congratulations to the student council for organising such a great day!

We raised about $200 from spider day.  We have used this money to buy nine rugby balls and eight soccer balls.  These are being sent to Fiji, to be given to kids over there who are still recovering from the terrible Cyclone Winston that swept through the area a few weeks ago.

Senior Team Book Sharing

It has become a tradition for the students in the senior team to gather together at the end of the term to share some of the cool things they've been working on in class throughout the term.  There were lots of great conversations happening during our sharing time today!

Free Sports Gear

Thanks to Alison (Lydia and Annabel's aunty), we have received some free sports gear from the iSport Foundation.  We'll certainly enjoy using this equipment!

Feilding Interschool Athletics

Lots of students from our class competed in the Feilding Interschool Athletics Champs today, and they sure did well!  Seth won the high jump and we had a clean sweep with the girls events - Lydia won the long jump, Greer the high jump, Olivia the shot put, Catherine the discus and Emma the 100m and 800m.  What an amazing performance!  We had lots of second and third placings too.  Congratulations on an awesome day!

T-Rex Art

Using some You Tube clips for inspiration, we've been experimenting with sketching the mighty Tyrannosaurs Rex!  Check out these awesome examples by Cody, Mya, Georgia and Te Ata:

Rippa Rugby

Almost everyone in our class was away at a Rippa Rugby tournament in Palmerston North today - and what a day it was!  Unfortunately, there were lots of teams that were bigger and better than us, but we still had plenty of fun and scored some awesome tries!

The Minstrel

Today we had a visit from the Minstrel - something we'd been looking forward to for ages!  Using his guitar and awesome sense of humour, he gave us some important messages related to fishing:

  • only take fish that are the right size - not the ones that are too small (give them a chance to live!), or the really big ones (they are the breeding stock)
  • if you are returning a fish to the water, do it carefully
  • make sure you handle fish with a wet towel
  • place fish on salted ice if you want them to taste 100% delicious
  • keep sea birds away from your boat by squirting them with a water pistol
  • always wear a life jacket
  • keep rubbish out of the ocean

Sentences

We learnt all about the three different types of sentences today!  We talked about what they are, discussed examples, identified them in our writing and in books, and finally wrote our own!  Hopefully, we'll be able to successfully write all three types of sentences in our writing in future.  Exciting times!

Interhouse Cricket

Over the past few weeks, we have been competing in an Interhouse Cricket competition!  This has been lots of fun and there have been some amazing skills on display.  Joining in events like this is an awesome way to develop lots of important skills and make a positive contribution to our house.

Friday was Finals Day.  First up, Rimu faced Kauri in the playoff for 3rd and 4th.  Kauri batted first and posted a hefty total of 120 - a great score!  After losing a couple of early wickets, Rimu's batters managed to play some wonderful shots, and they bet Kauri - but only just!

The final was between Totara and Matai.  Matai batted first, and posted a respectable score of 115, but they were worried that this wouldn't be enough - there are some pretty good batters in Totara!  So, Matai knew they would have to pull off a miracle in the field - and they did!  We have never seen so many incredible catches.  It was a very close battle in the end, as a couple of the Totara batters kept scoring runs.  It wasn't enough though, and Matai finally bowled Totara out for 95.

Congratulations to all four teams - what a magnificent display of sportsmanship and cricketing skill you put on.  Well done Matai!
