Today we worked down at the Halcombe Community Walkway. There was a lot of mulch to be moved and spread around the gardens, and a lot of weeding to be done in the carpark. We think it's pretty important to make a positive contribution to our community, and were happy to provide the man-power to help with these jobs. We picked up a lot of rubbish along the roadside on the way back to school too. It was VERY hot, and everyone had a good sweat up. Great work team!

Halcombe School Values - Triple A
This week, we've done a lot of work around our school values. We talked about each of our Triple A values, and then it was time for action! Working in teams, we had to act out different parts of each value. It was challenging to come up with ideas, but lots of fun too. Now we've put the whole thing together! Check it out:
Interhouse Flippaball
What an amazing Interhouse Flippaball competition we've had! Teams have been battling it out during lunchtimes, with everyone VERY keen to win the first competition of the year. On Friday, it was finals time. Matai faced Kauri in the playoff for 3rd and 4th, and Kauri won that battle. Then it was time for the final. Totara was the red hot favourite, and in the end, they proved too strong for Rimu. Congratulations to Totara on winning a very intense match! Everyone is already looking forward to the next interhouse event, cricket!
Fun Day Friday - Week 4
Here are the highlights from Fun Day Friday this week:
First it was time to practice our jump-from-the-side-and-catch-a-tennis-ball skills. Not easy!
Next we told Hamish it was time to buy a new rash top:
Then we worked in teams to try to win the Noodle Tower Championships!

Interhouse Sport - Flippaball
Today we kicked off our interschool sport competition for 2017. Flippaball (the Halcombe School version) is the first event on the calendar. There was no mucking around in the pool today, and it was all action in both matches. Good luck to all teams for the rest of the competition!

It was wonderful to see such great sportsmanship on display too - well done!

Buddy Class
We had another awesome swimming session with our buddy class today. First, they showed us what swimming skills they've been working on and then we tried to give them some helpful tips to improve. After that, we had a bit of a play around with races and a whirlpool. Our buddies were desperate to have another go at the human cannonball too!

Human vs Alien Art
We have just completed our second piece of art for 2017 and it looks cool! First we had to sketch the 'human' side, and we found out that drawing facial features is a bit tricky. Next we shaded the 'human' side with a black crayon. Then we got really creative and designed the 'alien' side! We used pastels to colour this part in. They look awesome on the wall, so call in sometime and have a look!

Life Education
We had the first of two visits to the Life Ed 'classroom' today. Tim, the teacher, told us loads of AMAZING facts and information about the human body. We're looking forward to another session tomorrow!

Sixtus Lodge
Wow, what an awesome three days we've had at Sixtus Lodge! We did loads of fun activities, including exploring Limestone Creek and Cone Creek, cooked marshmellows over camp fires, had Room 6 Survivor, performed speeches, had a 'tallest tower' tech challenge and of course.... played spotlight! We also talked a lot about the Key Competencies, and identified goals we have in this area. There were lots of very funny things that happened, and we all enjoyed getting to know our 'new' classmates.
Thank you very much to those parents who whipped up some mean Mac n Cheese meals and to those who did some baking (10/10 for whoever made the chocolate slice with walnuts in it).
Thank you to our awesome parent helpers: Mrs Bartlett, Mrs Jukes, Ms Allen, Mrs Te Whatu, Mr Thompson, Mr Blanchard and Mr O'Fee. Thanks to Mrs McKay and Mr Casey for helping transport us there too! We are so lucky to have so much support for our EOTC adventures!
Thanks for some of the cool photos below Mr Blanchard!
One of the best activities we did was write a positive message to all of our class mates. What a massive bunch of heart warming goodness these messages are. Hopefully this is something we'll all treasure for years to come.

Multiple Intelligences
This week, we learnt all about the different intelligences we have and ways we learn. It was pretty interesting! Being aware of these things, helps us to understand ourselves and be the best we can be. Check out these four examples:

The Baby Face Project
Today we FINALLY had a chance to do the Baby Face Project - something we had been looking forward to since Day 1. As a way of proving we are all uniquely awesome individuals, we all brought a baby photo to school - then we had to guess who was who. What a cute bunch we were!
Buddy Class
We were super excited to have our first buddy class with Room 2 today! The sun was shining (for once), so we decided to join them for a swim. What a whole heap of fun!

Garden Update
Our class is in charge of the glasshouse again this year. At the end of last year, we grew a massive crop of onions that we'll eat during our camp to Sixtus Lodge next week.
First up, we had to get rid of the weeds that had grown over the summer! Thanks to Hannah, Georgia, Emma, Gussie, Marie, Willow and William who offered to help with this job at lunchtime.
BEFORE:
Next Jack, Holly and Jessie did a great job of planting capsicums, lettuce and carrots. Thanks to Mrs Simpson for helping with this.

Swimming In The Rain
It was a tough bunch of students who braved swimming today... it was a wee bit cold apparently! After doing the 'serious' swimming, there was time for a quick free swim.

Playhouse
At the end of last year, our Student Council bought a super cool playhouse with the money they had raised during 2016. This has now been assembled and painted. The younger students will LOVE playing in this. Check it out:
