Sarah - Horizons Visitor - Round 2

Sarah from the Horizons Regional Council visited us again today.  We analysed the results from our tracking tunnels, and nearly all the groups had some pest action!  Some locations were more popular than others, and we discussed the reasons for this.  We've learnt a lot during our first attempt at tracking pests, and most groups agreed they'd do things a little differently next time.  It seems we have plenty of rats and mice around our school.

We are doing another round of tracking, this time using the 'proper' ink pads, rather than the home made job.  Some groups decided to move their tunnels to a different location.  We discussed using different bait, but decided to stick with peanut butter.

Sarah showed us a variety of different traps that can be used to kill pests, and we talked about the positives and negatives of each.  As a class, we decided we would like to try to trap and kill some pests around our school, so organising that is our next step.

  2. Thanks to Sarah for coming out to talk to us about the ink tunnels and what traps to use. This was so much fun and has inspired our class to keep trapping.

  3. I have enjoyed learning about pests and tracking them as well. It was interesting to see that when we all put our tunnels on the field and in the bushes outside room 2, that we all of them got tracks. I am hoping that we have caught a pest in out trap.

  5. It was cool watching Sarah poke the stick into the traps and watch the snap. Our ink tunnels all had tracks in them so we put a DOC 200 out by the fitness course on the field!!!

  9. It was really interesting to learn about the traps and how they worked. When we got to lift up the bars on the traps we could feel how strong they were.

  10. learning about bio-security was really fun. Before we did this unit I dint know what bio-security was. I also dint now the dangers of letting things like seeds skins and food from other country's come into our country as they could have a virus in them that can effect our native animals and plants.
