Protecting Our Oceans

To help us to get an overview of some of the issues we'll be learning about over the next few weeks, we watched four short movies.  What we saw had a powerful impact on us.  We completed a 'quick write' to organise our thoughts and feelings.  Here is what Jago, Hannah, Trevor and Victoria had to say:

JAGO

I SEE:
  • I see horrible things happening to beautiful creatures.
  • I see blood in the water from suffering harpooned whales.
  • I see nets as big as ferries being hauled in FULL of fish and by catch.

I THINK:
  • I think people need to be educated about the issues
  • I think that it is going to be miserable for the next generation to come.
  • I think that catching sea-food should be banned altogether world-wide until the marine environment gets back on its feet.

I FEEL:
  • I feel glad that some people are able to help save our seas.
  • I feel terrified that the amount of people helping to save our sea is tiny.
  • I feel shocked at the things that are happening in our oceans.

I WONDER:
  • I wonder if the ‘Sea Shepherd’ will succeed?
  • I wonder if anybody is going to take charge and do something?
  • I wonder if what humans have done is repairable?

HANNAH

I SEE:
  • Sharks being finned then put back into the ocean while they are still alive.
  • Too many fish being caught.
  • Some people trying to help whales and some people trying to kill them.

I THINK:
  • That everyone should be informed that if we don’t stop catching humongous amounts of fish, we will one day have none left.
  • People who put the nets down should go under water to check that there aren’t any endangered species caught in the nets.
  • The nurseries should have something around them to stop people ruining them!

I FEEL:
  • Like we take our whales for granted.
  • Like people don’t care about our ocean.
  • Super bad about not being able to do anything about shark finning.

I WONDER:
  • If one day, we will run out of fish in the ocean?
  • Why we do horrible things?
  • What the people are thinking when they fin the sharks, catch all the fish and kill the whales?

TREVOR

I SEE:
  • I see hundreds of fish getting caught in nets.
  • I see sharks being cruelly finned and flapping around on the deck of the ship.
  • I see lots of marine life and beautiful coral sea floors.

I THINK:
  • I think that the adult marine creatures protect their young.
  • I think that people should be careful and find a way to stop by catch and shark finning.
  • I think we should take more care of our marine life and not catch tens of thousands of fish in a single net.

I FEEL:
  • I feel sad to know that people are just killing seals with baseball bats and killing sea life, like they were just a piece of trash.
  • I also feel happy to know that there are some people who are willing to go out and save fish and other marine life.
  • Like I am just beginning to understand some of the issues like finning and other terrible things that happen in our ocean.

I WONDER:
  • I wonder what would happen if fish ever became extinct?
  • I wonder why people don’t care about over fishing?
  • I wonder if destroying coral and other ocean floor plants would affect fish?

VICTORIA

I SEE:
  • I can see how whales aren’t scared when a human is close to them, because they are the beasts of the sea.
  • I can see that people fin sharks. THAT SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED!
  • I can see why people want the food, but they don’t need to take that much!

I THINK:
  • I think if you kill any sea creature you should go to jail (for few months), because that’s what happens with humans.
  • It’s sad that all of these fish are getting caught in nets.
  • I think BIG net fishing should be BANNED, but fishing on a little boat (normal size) should be okay, but have limits as well.

I FEEL:
  • I feel sad, because people who hurt sea creatures are getting away with it.
  • I feel disappointed, because people cut fins of sharks and then throw them back into the water alive.
  • That we need to do something, now.

I WONDER:
  • I wonder if they are ever going to ban net fishing off a huge boat/ship?
  • I wonder if there will be fish in the future, because people catch so many?
  • I wonder if the sharks will give the people ‘pay back’ and hurt us just as much as we hurt them?

  1. It is very sad to see such things happening in our oceans. Hopefully more and more people are made aware of the issues that are going on out there and they all decide to help in any way they can.

  2. The more aware people become about these things, hopefully the more we can save the ocean species. Some people are so money hungry that they will not for anything. Learn as much as you can about how you can make a difference, even if is a small one.

  3. I think the things these people do are horrible. Why in the world would you want to hurt such beautiful marine creatures.

  4. I enjoyed your writing, not so much reading about the things that are happening in our oceans. Sometimes when things happen in the world and we don't know about them we cant do anything to help.
By learning about this room 6 you will be able to share your knowledge with others and then changes can happen. We've seen this in New Zealand many times, though most recently through protesting about Japans whaling in our waters. The government listened and Japan has been stopped. Information is power, and standing up for things that aren't right does make a big difference. Imagine all things that aren't right in the world that could be fixed if everyone got together and said that's enough!
