Today was Pet Day! The pets were awesome. The indoor exhibits were amazing. The sausages were yummy. The weather was perfect. It was another great day at Halcombe School!
Here are some of the Room 6 students with pets in action:
We also had a Country Kids Challenge, where four students from each house competed in a series of challenges. It was very entertaining! Congratulations to Totara who just bet Rimu to come first. Check out the action shots!

Pet Day Indoor Exhibits
Here is a sneak peak of our rural photos and scarecrow masks. If you want a close up look, come along to Pet Day - our work will be on display in the hall.
Scarecrow Masks
Last week we put the finishing touches on our scarecrow masks, all ready to show off on Pet Day. We used vivids to touch up our painting, added eyes, and finally varnished our masks with spray paint. They look pretty cool!

A Bit Of A Bang... That's For Sure!
Around 1800 years ago, there was a MASSIVE volcanic eruption in the central North Island. The fact that Lake Taupo was created in this explosion, gives us a clue about just how big it was. We've been reading all about this event and then used Coggle to display facts about what happened. Have a read of these examples by Bethany and Isaac:
1080 Poison - Good Or Bad?
We've been learning all about 1080, which is a poison used by DOC to kill pests such as possums, rats and stoats. We have read a lot of information, and had to show our thinking using the yellow (positives), black (negatives) and red (our opinion) hats. Here are some of the ideas that some of us came up with today:
Next we had to display our learning using this cool presentation site called Haiku Deck. Check out these great presentations made by Leah and Grace:

Basketball
The basketball season has finished! It has been a long season, running since the beginning of T2. We've had heaps of fun, even though some of the games have been pretty tough! It has been awesome to see everyone's skills develop too. Thank you to our coaches: Mrs Alcock, Mrs Mudgway, Mrs Tai and Mr Henderson.
The White team made it into the final against Saint Josephs. The score was tied 2-2 at full time, so extra time was played. The team to score first would win. Both teams tried very hard to score in a very physical game, and eventually Saint Josephs scored first. Well done to Jade, Isaac, Jed and Greer - you almost had it!

Fitness Circuit
Our training for cross country looked a bit different today; instead of running, we did a fitness circuit in the hall. We rotated around 12 different activities - everything from push ups to skipping to arm weights (shotputs), to hurdles to step ups to sit ups to sprinting. We had one minute at each activity, with 20 seconds between each. It was hard going, and we definitely got a real sweat up!

Cross Country Training
Today we had the opportunity to scope out our cross country track in preparation for the real race on Friday. The good news is that there were hardly any prickles, and the bad news... the bog was very boggy!

Interschool Speech Competition
Catherine and Jorja were chosen to represent our school at the annual Interschool Speech Competition, with North Street School and Saint Josephs. Both girls performed their speeches very well and should be proud of their achievements. A special congratulations to Jorja, who won the Year 8 competition! Thank you to Saint Josephs School, who hosted this event this year.

Touch
Some of the students in our class will be playing touch on Thursday afternoons this term. They had their first games today and even though they were pretty tired after cross country training, they did really well! With a bit more practice, they'll be even better!
Cross Country Training
We've been training really hard every day this week. It was hot work in the sun today! If you'd like to read about our individual goals, check out our blogs!
Mask Painting
We're well underway with the painting of our scarecrow masks for Pet Day. It is going to take a lot of coats of paint before they look 100% awesome, but we're on the right track!
Shake Out
At 9.15am this morning, our school participated in Shake Out, a nationwide earthquake drill. We did all the right things in Room 6 - DROP, COVER, HOLD!
Following this drill, we all moved to our evacuation point for a roll call. It is really good to practice these things, so that we don't have to think what to do in a real emergency - we'll just know.

Cross Country Training
We had an awesome first training session for the cross country today. We ran laps of the gravel road behind the school, with most people running at least 5km. Well done and keep up the great work!

Unfortunately Jade didn't win the Doodle For Google competition, but we're still really proud of her for making into the Top 5 for Year 7 & 8 students in New Zealand. Congratulations to Caleb from Breens Intermediate in Christchurch who won with this doodle:
