I read this story last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Kurt and Emma are kind hardworking people who have big hearts and generous souls. They gave food and shelter in return for the children's labour but also offered a chance at freedom by supplying the family with canoes so they could try to reunite with their parents.
