PJ And Pie Day

What an epically awesome day at Halcombe School!  Not only did we get to wear our pyjamas and be super comfortable all day, but almost all the kids at our school had a pie for lunch too!  The Student Council did a wonderful job of coordinating both events - well done team!  We think crazy days like this are lots of fun and help to make our school a bit special.

Here are some PJ pictures:

The job of treasurer for the Student Council is very important - you're in charge of the money!  Here is Jaxson counting the pie money:

Winter Sport - Netball

We have started our winter sport programme - our first sport was netball with Miss Jeynes.  Despite the injuries (concrete surfing and getting hit in the face), we had loads of fun learning to play netball.  We have plenty of netball experts who tried to patiently explain the rules to the rest.

I learnt how to throw a chest pass - Holly
I learnt what obstruction is - Jaxson
I learnt about all the different positions - Tyler
I learnt about the position of WA - Kyle

King Tutankhamun

Today marked the end of our Ancient Egyptian overview - we've learnt a lot about a lot of the last few weeks.  From here we move into a new stage - independent research projects.

We saved the best till last!  We took a really close look at the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 by archaeologist Howard Carter.  It is a fascinating story.  We put on our Red Hats and did some thinking from the perspective of Howard Carter:

Cybersafety With Constable Hayden

Today we had a visit from Constable Hayden from the Feilding Police, who talked to us about all kinds of cybersafety scenarios and issues.  It is so important for us to know how to keep ourselves safe online, and use other ICT equipment in an appropriate way.  Constable Hayden shared some pretty scary facts and stories with us, and it was interesting to talk through each one.  We have another session next week too.

Creative Writing

We've been developing our creative writing skills this week.  The challenge was to think of an animal that we shared similar characteristics with, and write all about it!  We all enjoyed sharing our writing with others:

Have a read of these wonderful examples:

Trevor the Plover

I am like a plover, because they’re small and like to just chill out. I am like a plover when I just sit down for hours watching TV. A plover sits on its eggs for countless hours steering at sunsets and the cold blue sky as the clouds slowly float by. Like a plover I like to fly around and lie down when I’m out of breath.

Plovers are territorial and aggressive, because they don’t like being bullied or pushed around I hate being pushed around and bullied by others too. I don’t like things being moved or stolen from me, like Yorkshire pudding being stolen from my mouth when I’m having a roast dinner. I don’t like things being moved in my room.

I’m creative like a plover building a nest. I like thinking of things unique and original things, just like a plover. Some of the unique and original things I do are drawing differently to others, because I have my own and unique ways of drawing things. By original, I mean I like to think outside of the box.

Plovers are annoying and don’t stop chittering and chattering. All they do is talk about things. I’m a chatterbox, too, although I am shy around new people.

I like playing around and exploring, like when I’m in water. I like playing, but I hate racing others in water or going a long way out to sea, just like the plover. I like exploring just like a plover likes to fly around to different places, I like to explore new things like the glow worm caves at Sixtus Lodge.

Alexander the Galapagos Iguana

Galapagos Iguana’s are always in a large colony.  They feed in colonies, and they live in colonies.  I am like an iguana in this way because I enjoy the company of others, I talk with others and I eat with others.  I am always with my friends at school, and when I am at home my family is always there.

Iguanas are very fit.  They swim for hours a day and often have to run from predators.  Like the iguana, I love to swim for hours; especially in the sea.  I like to run and when we play games at school I run very fast from the tagger.

Iguanas are mainly herbivores, eating seaweed from the bottom of the sea floor.  However they are also scavengers and often eat pieces of stray meat from deceased animals, be it a tortoise or a dead iguana.  Like the iguana I like salads and seaweed (mainly on crackers or wrapped around sushi), I also love meat.  My favourite food is meat and salad. Therefore like the iguana, I am fit and take whatever food comes my way.

Iguanas have tough skin and sharp spikes.  I have tough, rough skin.  In the morning my hair has a life of its own and is spikey and sticking out at odd angels.  These things give me the traits of an Iguana and the Iguana the traits of a strange boy living in New Zealand.

Juliet the Border Collie

Border collies love to laze around outdoors in the sun, but they also have a fierce side.  They are friendly, energetic and of course just a tad lazy.  There is no better animal than a border collie that could be used to describe me.  Often I go around easily pleased, but I do have a particularly fierce side.

Border collies are often relaxing in the sun without a care in the world.  I sure do love sleeping, lazing around and everybody knows never to wake me up when I’m sleeping in.

Border collies are hard workers and always try their very best.  During school and at home when I am needed for a job, I do it.  Also I strive to achieve my very best and put hours of work into something to make it of a high standard. Border collies plough through their work and as long as they are well fed they will stay in an excellent mood.  I’m the same. I need food otherwise I get cranky and unreasonable.

These beautiful dogs are intelligent and are aware of the tiniest things.  Border collies are perfectionists and I am the same, because I don’t see the point in doing a job and not doing it well.  Border collies bound around the place with their thoughts running wild.  I certainly think about my plans in school work, games and everyday activities.  Some people say I overthink things, but at least then it goes according to plan.

Jasmine the Labrador

Labradors are funny dogs who are very good companions. They are very friendly and cuddly and are very welcoming dogs. I think I would be like a labrador because I am quite friendly and loving too. They are quite big and tall, just like me. They have this funny look on their face telling people that they are a bit goofy. That is like me because you will often find me daydreaming!

Their personality matches my personality almost exactly! They are playful and are always hyped up. I get hyped up too sometimes when I have been running around a lot. They like to explore and they don’t mind getting their paws dirty. Labradors have a very bubbly personality just like me because I always have a smile on my face.  One of the main things that they have in common with me is that they are always hungry! They will eat a lot of food in one day and won’t be satisfied!

If you were to describe a labrador and its habits, you would probably say that they are, playful, chilled, social, and not the smartest of dogs. This compares to me because I can be crazy some days and chilled the next.

Elen the Panther

Panthers are extremely active. They are very good runners, swimmers and climbers. In this way I am like a panther, because there isn’t a day in the week where I do not play a sport. I am very active and sporty. This makes me like a panther.

Panthers are sleek, muscly and beautiful. When they are catching prey, panthers are elegant and they always make it look easy. Many people have told me that when I am swimming I look like I am not even trying.  In my own opinion this makes me like a panther.

Panthers have their own personal traits which are not unlike mine. For example, I am very determined and I will not give up easily, I am very stubborn. I am confident with everything I do, from making friends to competing in a sport. A panther is like this, because if they want to get something to eat they will not give up until they are collapsing with exhaustion or they are up a tree eating their dinner. Panthers mostly have yellow eyes, which makes them have a sly look about them. They are also very cunning. This makes me like them, because I can be quite sly when I want to be.

Panthers love lying in the sun and having their alone time. I am like this, because I love my alone time and there is nothing better than relaxing in the sun on a hot day. If you have ever seen a picture of a panther they are often doing one of three things, catching prey, roaming or relaxing in the sun. Whenever I am on the beach I will do my playing first then I will crash down on the beach towel and attempt to get a tan!

Relating To Others - Toondoo

This week, we've been working on comic strips using Toondoo.  We had to show a 'Relating To Others' scenario that we have had direct experience with - we had to include the problem or the 'bad' thing that happened, as well as show the solution.  While waiting for the programme to load was very frustrating, we had a lot of fun once it got going.  We hope to use Toondoo again in the future.

The Udjat - Eye Of Horus

We have been learning about the Udjat, or Eye of Horus.  Egyptian myth states that Horus lost his eye during a battle with another god, Seth.  With the help of other gods, Horus recovered his eye.  'Udjat' translates to complete/healthy/intact.  This eye became the symbol for everything to do with healing.  It is also believed to provide protection against all imaginable dangers!

We looked at lots of different examples of the Udjat, then drew our own:

Tech Update

Today we had our second session of Tech.  Check out the photos!

Egyptian God Art

The Ancient Egyptians worshipped many different gods - they had gods to represent almost all aspects of daily life.  We studied some of these gods and found it fascinating to learn about their influence on Ancient Egyptian life.

We drew pictures of different gods, and researched information about each one!

Reading Hieroglyphics

After doing a bit of practice of reading hieroglyphics, it was time to put our skills to the test.  We worked in teams to do a treasure hunt.  There were directions and clues in nine locations around the school.  Our job was to read the information - written in hieroglyphs - and decode the message!

15 May 2013

Processing Information

Today we learnt all about Ancient Egyptian writing, known as hieroglyphics.  We read loads of interesting information about hieroglypics, scribes, and how the Rosetta Stone helped to translate hieroglyphs in the 1800s.  We had a good look at the hieroglyphic alphabet, deciphered some sentences and then wrote our own!

We also reviewed our knowlege of key words:

After that, we practiced putting information into our own words using a special technique called Note Making and Note Taking:

Today we worked with a partner to complete this task - next time we'll be on our own!

People Savers Course

Today we had a full-day People Savers First Aid Course.  For most people it was a great refresher for the first aid knowledge we learnt last year.  For other people, the information was all new!  A massive 'thank you' to Kate from the New Zealand Red Cross, who ran the course for us.  Check out the photos!

One of the highlights of the day, was when we 'mummified' Jago and Olivia C.  We were practicing our bandaging skills too!

Ancient Egyptian Society - A Hierarchy

We learnt all about the Ancient Egyptian society.  We started our learning by finding a definition of the word 'hierarchy'.  Here is the definition Trevor found in the dictionary:

In Ancient Egypt, some people were more important than others.  At the top of society, was the pharaoh, and at the bottom were the slaves.  We had a look at an example of a pyramid that showed the levels of society, then we created our own.  Here is an example:

Next we worked in groups to find out about a typical day in the life of each of these groups.  We used books and lots of different websites to find our information.  We are pretty good at working well together on tasks like this!

Here is a sample of the information we found out:

Tech Begins

Our much-awaited Tech programme has begun!  We'll have Tech each Friday, through till the end of Term 3.  We will spend six weeks doing each of the following:
  • hard materials (woodwork) with Mr Stoneley
  • food technology (cooking/baking) with Mrs Neville
  • CO2 cars (racing cars) with Mrs Bowles
We LOVED our first session, and are looking forward to creating more great products, and learning lots of skills along the way!

Seega - An Ancient Egyptian Game

Today we learnt how to play Seega, a game played by the Ancient Egyptians!  It is a bit like naughts and crosses, and is quick and fun to play.  It involves tactical thinking, concentration and a bit of luck!

First Assembly

Today we had our first assembly for the year.  Our assemblies are run by our Student Council - Molly and Nelly were first up.  Well done girls, you did a great job!

ANZ Netball Grant

We recently applied to the ANZ for a special gear pack - 20 netballs, 2 pumps and 2 gear bags.  We were successful and the goodies arrived today!  We can't wait to try out the new equipment.  Thanks ANZ!

White Hat Thinking - Ancient Egypt

After finding out that almost all of Egypt is desert, apart from the area directly either side of the River Nile, we thought we had better find out how these things affected the daily lives of the Ancient Egyptians.  We put on our White Hats and got to work.  We used books and the internet to find out all sorts of information, before sharing it with the rest of the class.  Check it out!

Garden Update

It was time to re-plant our garden, so Holly, Jasmine, Olivia C and Victoria got stuck into it!  They planted onions, silverbeat, cauliflower, brocolli and some flowers.  Fingers crossed they grow well.  Thank you girls!

Relating To Others Comic Life

We have upgraded our Comic Life to the super-duper version.  It did not take us long to get the hang of using it - it's awesome!  We used Comic Life to create charts to display all the ways we relate well to others.  They are very effective!

Relating To Others

This term, our Key Competency focus is RELATING TO OTHERS.  Today we worked with a partner to discuss all kinds of different scenarios.  We had to think about what we could do if this situation happened to us.  We had some excellent ideas:

Mapping Skills

Today we learnt how to label a map correctly!  Here are the things we need to remember:

Next, we used our new skills to create a map of Ancient Egypt.  Check out this great example, drawn by Alex:

Poppy Art

Even though ANZAC Day was in the school holidays, we still took the time to discuss this important day, and how we chose to celebrate it.  It was awesome to hear that so many students in our class attended dawn parades or services.  We took a close look at the famous poem 'In Flanders Fields', and discussed the deeper meanings within this poem.  We also talked about the significance of the poppy.  We found inspiration in some art done by Room 2 earlier in the year, and created this simple but effective poppy art:

Topic Brainstorm

We kicked off our learning about Ancient Egypt by brainstorming a list of everything we already knew about this topic.  Some of us know a little bit of information about Ancient Egypt, others not so much!  We are all looking forward to learning HEAPS of information and developing some excellent information skills during this topic.

Here we are brainstorming our ideas:

And here is what we already know about Ancient Egypt:

Ancient Egypt

Term Two has arrived!  Our topic for the first seven weeks of this term is...

The big idea is...

The Ancient Egyptian civilisation flourished for almost 3,000 years, and was one of the most brilliant and long-lasting civilisations in the ancient world.
