Dealing With Challenging Situations

As part of our inquiry work, we've been learning about strategies we can use when we face tough times.  Unfortunately life isn't always easy, and we have to be able to deal with lots of challenging things.  

Firstly, we made a list of all the challenges we might face during the next few years of our lives:

Next we came up with a massive list of things we could do to help us 'survive' the challenging situations.  We had fun playing around with the fonts and colours too!

Interhouse Flippaball

The annual Interhouse Flippaball tournament has started!  Lots of kids have signed up, and the first games were really even.  There were some great physical battles and tactics used.  Wonder who will come out on top at the end of the week?

Jandal Art

How cool is our Jandal Art?  After choosing the background we wanted, we had to sketch out lots of ideas for funky and original patterns/designs to place on our jandals.  Then we used black outline pens and coloured pencils to colour our patterns.  They look awesome!  You can read about our reflections about our art, on our blogs.  Thanks to Mr Overeem from Maungatapere School in Whangarei for the great idea!

Garden Time

R6 Kids Should Be...

Today we brainstormed ideas for what we think kids in Room 6 should be - or try to be!  We're going to do a lot more thinking and talking about this, but we made a great start today.  Here are two awesome examples:

Fun Day Friday (Thursday)

We've agreed to spend half of our swimming time on Fridays doing fun challenges and games.  We were very good at negotiating this to be on Thursday of this week, as it's Waitangi Day tomorrow!  

One of the challenges was to work together so that all three members of your team were standing on two noodles.  How hard could that be?

Then it was girls vs boys - the first team to get three people to stand up on a noodle raft for 20 seconds each, would win.  Check out the video!

Week One Highlights

The 'Ideal' Teacher

Today we worked with a partner to brainstorm ideas about what our 'ideal' teacher looks like.  This will give Miss Simpson some ideas about how to be the best teacher possible!  Here is a summary of we came up with:

• be happy 24/7, fun loving, makes jokes and pranks the kids sometimes
• plan fun activities
• recommend books
• help us with our learning

Mathletics

You wanted it, you got it!  Mathletics is back!  You can launch into it as soon as you get your password.  You are more than welcome to do some at home, though this is not compulsory.  Mathletics will be an important part of our maths programme this year, but in the meantime, get stuck in and refresh your memory about how it works.
